Salsa Away From Home - Singapore

I love to Salsa.

Whenever I have the opportunity to travel, my first thoughts are ... "hmm... I wonder if they have Salsa Clubs here". I don't know if I am a little overboard, but I am hoping there are others out there who thinks like me. But I know someone who share the same passion as me. He is Tony Goh and with a group of friends, we've been learning salsa together for a while now.

Fortunately for Tony, his job requires him to travel a lot. And fortunately for us, wherever he is ... he scouts for Salsa Clubs. Which brings me to start this episode called the "Salsa Away From Home". I figure, not only should we provide the readers with the name and locations of Salsa clubs ... we should share the experiences we have in the club. A little bit of club review, in a certain sense.

We had a couple of write-ups in the previous postings on clubs abroad but let's start afresh in this post.

In this first posting, we have Tony reporting back from Singapore. He has recently visited the Union Square @ The Amara. Here's an article on the venue.

Opened in 2000, Union Square at The Amara is the only place in Singapore where you can get Salsa music six days a week provided by DJs and live bands from Cuba & Colombia. It is also the first local club to introduce bar-top putting. Golfers’ night happens every Monday. Union Square has established itself as a congregation venue for salsa enthusiasts from the four local major dance studios. It has even designated Tuesday nights for Salsa beginners to rehearse their moves. The club’s deejay will gladly play Latin and Salsa song dedication requests from audience . Enjoy the performances of foreign and local artistes at the Wine bar. There is also a pool table for pool players.

LOCATION
165 Tanjong Pagar Road
The Amara #02-05
Singapore 239924

HOURS
Mon-Thu 11am to 1am,
Fri 11am to 2am,

AMBIENCE
Located in the second floor of a rather dodgy shopping mall, Union Square is a suprisingly decent bar. Even with its liberal use of red, the place manages to look classy without looking like Heidi Fleiss's boudoir. There's a live DJ for those who want to burn some calories, but most of the clientele's usually quite happy just playing pool or chilling out with their drinkies.

CROWD
Mainly local executive after a long day at work. Whip out the Johnny Walker!

X-FACTOR
There's a Salsa and Merengue night on Tuesdays and Thursdays for those who feel the need to come-on-shake-your-body-baby-do-the-conga.

Mon-Sat 11am to 9pm.
